Application Modernization

Software application modernization is an important strategy for many organizations wanting to remain relevant in today’s fiercely competitive climate.

A common objective of a modernization initiative is to future-proof existing applications by improving security, reliability, scalability, and adaptability to new needs, operating environments, and business requirements. Another important aspect is to ensure that the user experience continues to be pleasant, productive, and up-to-date.

By applying tailored modernization strategies, software applications can be gradually and iteratively improved in a very cost-efficient manner; protecting your investments and prolonging the applications’ life span.

Activities

Application modernization involves several activities depending on the situation and needs.

This typically includes:

Objectives
We will begin with establishing the business objectives and stakeholder expectations in a clear, concise, and measurable way. Collaborative workshops are usually a very productive format to ensure that all key decision-makers and influencers are heard.

Assessment
A thorough study of the existing software application is essential to understand its architecture, functionality, performance, scalability, security, and user experience. We will identify major pain points and areas of improvement.

Infrastructure
Depending on the current state, ways to improve the application infrastructure may be to leverage cloud-based resources, including virtual machines, containers, and serverless computing.

Data
The data architecture may need to be modernized to support the growing demands of modern applications. This could include using data storage technologies such as Cloud platforms, NoSQL databases, data lakes, and data warehouses, and adopting a data-driven approach to software application development.

Code
Modernization of the codebase could include adopting modern software development practices, such as agile, DevOps, and CI/CD, and leveraging modern programming languages and frameworks.

UX
The user experience may be modernized to enhance the usability, accessibility, and desirability of the software application.

Outcome

The main outcome of the modernization initiative will be a shared understanding of the benefits of modernization and the activities involved.

This will be documented in a comprehensive report, the Application Modernization Memorandum. The memorandum will include:

  • Executive summary: A high-level summary of key findings and recommendations to support your decision making.
  • Detailed chapters: For each important aspect of your existing application, we will identify strengths and potential areas of improvement. This will usually include both architecture, infrastructure, UX aspects, code-related issues and data.
  • Strategies: We will structure and summarize all major findings and observations. Based on this and your business objectives, we will recommend the most relevant and fruitful modernization strategies for you to pursue.
  • Tactics: We will provide specific implementation recommendations based on experience and good practice.
  • Roadmap: The memorandum will also propose a roadmap, outlining the timelines, milestones, and rough estimates of the budgetary requirements associated with the modernization effort.
